The ceiling stain from the storm is growing fuzz.

In North Port that stain usually traces back to one of a few things: shingles that lifted in a hurricane, weeks without air conditioning after the power went out, a flex duct sweating in the attic, or a slab that pulled canal water up into the walls. Call us now and tell us what you see. We put you through to a local mold provider who tracks down the moisture first.

Something kept that drywall wet

A spot on a North Port wall is the last step, not the first. Before it showed up, water sat in the board long enough for growth to take hold. In this city the water usually came from above or from the air: a roof that opened up in a storm, a window that leaked under wind-driven rain, an air handler closet that overflowed, or a house that sat sealed and hot through a wet summer. Painting the spot buys a few weeks. The moisture behind it keeps working.

When you call, the provider you reach starts with a moisture meter, not a sprayer. The readings show which drywall is wet, whether the insulation behind it is holding water, and where the water is still coming from. Those readings set the size of the job, not the size of the stain you can see.

Florida splits mold work into two licenses, one for assessors who inspect and write the plan, and one for remediators who do the removal. This site puts you through to the remediation side: containment, removal, cleaning, drying, and repair of whatever caused it. If an assessor has already written a report on your house, keep it near the phone when you call.

Talk to someone now about the mold in your North Port home

Describe the room, the stain or the smell, and what got wet. The call goes to an independent local provider who handles mold removal and remediation in your part of Sarasota County.

  • Name the room and say whether the growth is on drywall, a ceiling, tile, or inside a cabinet.
  • Mention any roof damage, storm water, or power outage from Ian, Helene, or Milton, even if it was repaired.
  • Say whether the smell gets stronger when the air conditioning runs.
  • Tell the person who answers if the house sat closed up for the summer.
  • Mention whether the home is on a private well and septic or on city water.
  • Say if a buyer, tenant, or home inspector raised it, and whether an assessor already wrote a report.
  • Have the property address and a number where the provider can reach you.

Inside the plastic, step by step, in a North Port house

What the crew does What it means for you
Moisture readings in every suspect wall before cutting The scope comes from numbers, not from a guess about what is behind the drywall
Plastic sheeting over the doorway and negative air inside the zone Dust and spores stay in the sealed room instead of riding the ductwork through the house
Wet drywall, insulation, and baseboard bagged inside the containment Porous material that grew mold leaves the house without touching clean rooms
Block, slab, tile, and metal framing cleaned and dried in place Materials that do not rot stay, which keeps the rebuild smaller than the demolition
The leak, the condensation, or the ventilation problem fixed as part of the job You are not paying to remove growth while the thing that fed it keeps running
Photos, a moisture log, and an itemized scope at the end An adjuster, a buyer, or a park manager gets a record instead of a reassurance

Put the bleach bottle down first

If the patch is smaller than a dinner plate and it sits on tile or painted block, a detergent wipe-down is a fair first move. If it is on drywall, on a ceiling, inside a closet, under a sink, or bigger than that, stop. Close the door to that room, leave the air conditioning on, and set the thermostat fan to auto so the system is not pulling air out of the problem room all day. Bleach soaks into drywall paper and never reaches the growth inside the board. Find where the water came from, then make the call.

Canals, slabs, and septic lots: why North Port grows mold differently

General Development Corporation platted this city in the late 1950s and dug roughly 80 miles of canals to drain the sloughs into buildable lots. Most of the houses that followed are concrete block on a slab, built in waves from the 1980s through the 2020s, on lots big enough that a large share of them still run on private wells and septic tanks. There is no basement here. Mold lives in the attic, behind bathroom walls, in the air handler closet, and along the bottom course of block where storm water sat.

Hurricane Ian came ashore just to the south on September 28, 2022, and dropped more than 20 inches of rain on the city. The Myakka River set a record crest days later, Price Boulevard washed out at four crossings, and many North Port homes went a week or more without power. A roof that leaked that week over a house with no air conditioning is the single most common story behind a mold call here, and Helene and Milton in the fall of 2024 added a second round.

When drywall, plumbing, or electrical go back in after removal, the rebuild often needs a permit from the city's Development Services permitting desk at City Hall. When the rebuild needs one, the provider files for it.

Does a Florida homeowners policy pay for mold after a hurricane?

Many Florida policies cap mold at a set dollar amount unless you bought an endorsement, and most exclude mold that grew from a slow leak nobody fixed. Nothing on this page promises what your policy will pay. The adjuster decides. What the crew can do is hand that adjuster something solid: dated photos, a moisture log, and a line-by-line scope of what came out and why. If water is still moving in the house, call before the adjuster visits, because a wall that stays wet another week becomes a bigger claim than the one you have today. For anyone in the house having trouble breathing, the emergency department at Sarasota Memorial's ER at Toledo Blade is staffed around the clock.
